Making a wooden Advent calendar: 5 steps

To make a wooden Advent calendar, the simplest method is a board featuring twenty-four reusable pouches. This avoids fiddly little boxes that are difficult to assemble and allows you to change the surprises every year. Success depends mainly on the spacing, the hooks, and the final mounting.

Here are five steps: sizing the board, preparing the wood, installing the hooks, organizing the pouches, and checking stability. The project presented is interior decor for small, lightweight items, not a toy or storage intended to support heavy objects.

Size the board around the twenty-four pouches

Wooden board measured with a ruler with a layout plan for the twenty-four pouches.

First, choose the pouches, then the wood. A layout of four columns by six rows is easy to verify: four times six is twenty-four. Lay the pouches flat, with a representative-sized surprise inside, to observe their real width once filled.

A board of approximately 50 × 70 cm can serve as a starting point for small pouches, but it is not a universal size. Adjust it to your contents and the available space. Leave an outer margin and enough height between the rows so that the cords do not get tangled.

Trace the outline of the board on paper or cardboard before buying. A full-scale template allows you to judge the result on the wall without making multiple cuts. Also, identify the two suspension points for the board: they must remain accessible, above the pouches.

Prepare a short list: a sound and dry board, twenty-four pouches, hooks suitable for its thickness, pencil, ruler, sanding block, and appropriate wall fixings. A board already cut to the correct dimensions simplifies the project significantly for a beginner.

Prepare smooth wood before any decoration

Manual sanding of the edge of a plywood board to eliminate splinters.

Inspect both faces and the edges. Discard a board that is split, delaminated, or stained by an unknown product. Salvaged wood is only worthwhile if its condition and treatment are identifiable. Surfaces damaged around the hooks can deteriorate quickly when the pouches are handled.

Remove splinters with a sanding block and abrasive suitable for the state of the wood, then move to a finer grit. Work on the edges without hollowing out the corners. The goal is not to heavily round the board, but to remove fibers that snag skin or fabric.

Keep the board on a stable surface. For operations that produce dust, use appropriate extraction and recommended protective gear. Do not sweep dust toward your face and do not blow on it. Clean the support before continuing.

If you wish to paint, do so before installing the hooks. Test the finish on a scrap piece and respect its full drying time. Decoration that appears dry to the touch may still mark the pouches. Keep a test area to compare the color after drying.

Align and pre-drill for the hooks without piercing through the board

Return to the plan and mark the lines with a light pencil. Always measure from the same edge, rather than transferring each interval from the previous one: a small error should not accumulate until the last column. Check the grid with the pouches before drilling.

Choose small screw-in hooks or fastenings for which the manufacturer specifies the use and dimensions. The threaded part must not protrude at the back. A board that is too thin requires a different mounting method, such as a through-assembly designed for this support; do not simply use longer screws at random.

Prepare the pilot hole according to the diameter recommended for the hook and the wood. Use a compatible depth stop if necessary. Place a protection board underneath and immobilize the assembly. A test on a scrap piece of the same thickness is safer than the first hole in the finished board.

The DEKO drill driver allows this work with a drill bit compatible with its chuck. Start slowly and keep the axis perpendicular. Remove the battery before changing the bit. Finish installing small hooks by hand if their shape does not allow for proper screwing, without crushing the fibers.

Organize the surprises without overloading the hooks

Fabric pouch hung on a small hook, with regular spacing between the hooks.

Verify that each hook is secure with no play, then hang the empty pouches. The cords should pass through easily without being too long. Avoid large loops accessible to young children and sharp or detachable decorations. An adult maintains control over the distribution of the surprises.

Prioritize lightweight contents: notes, vouchers for an activity, small age-appropriate accessories, or treats in their packaging. Do not use the calendar to hang glass jars, heavy toys, or objects that would turn a decoration into a significant load.

Number the pouches legibly. You can arrange them in order to facilitate use or mix their positions for a small daily game. In both cases, count them before filling: a missing row is easier to correct when everything is still empty.

Test handling a pouch located in the middle. It should unhook without pulling its neighbor or requiring force on the hook. If the fabric gets stuck, increase the spacing or reduce the volume of the contents rather than forcing it.

Mount the calendar and prepare for reuse

Weigh or estimate the loaded board seriously before choosing its fixings. The nature of the wall and the characteristics of the fasteners matter as much as the weight. For a hollow wall, masonry, or furniture, the solutions are not interchangeable. Follow the fixing manufacturer's instructions.

Prefer two suitable suspension points to limit tilting. Check for the absence of networks (pipes/wires) before any wall drilling. Do not hang the calendar above a bed, a narrow passage, or an area where someone could grab it. It must remain far from flames and heat sources.

Once installed, check stability gently, without hanging from the board. Also observe the back: no screw tips should touch or scratch the wall. If the board moves, remove it and correct the fixing before replacing the pouches.

After the holidays, empty everything, clean the pouches according to their material, and store the board in a dry place. Photograph the organization and keep the small hooks together. The following year, a check of the wood and the fixings will be enough to decide if it can go back into service.

To remember: making a wooden Advent calendar becomes easier when the pouches determine the plan. A smooth board, suitable hooks, and a stable suspension count for more than complicated decoration. Prepare the equipment before starting and keep the calendar light.
