Impact drill or rotary hammer: which one to choose?

The selection includes corded or cordless impact drills, hammer drills, and SDS rotary hammers, including chipping models. It is designed for brick, cinder block, stone, or concrete, with different levels of intensity depending on the diameter, depth, and frequency of the holes.

The four criteria for masonry

  • Impact mechanism: The impact drill is suitable for occasional and moderate holes; an SDS rotary hammer is more suitable for concrete and series of drilling. Chiseling requires a dedicated mode.
  • Energy and rate: Power, impact rate, and motor design influence progress. Compare full characteristics rather than an isolated torque figure.
  • Shank: Classic chuck and SDS Plus do not accept the same drill bits. Check the system, the announced maximum diameter, and the accessories actually supplied.
  • Power supply: Corded is suitable for continuous work near an outlet; cordless facilitates movement. For the latter, check voltage, autonomy, and battery compatibility.

Which tool for your material?

To attach a few anchors in a brick or a compatible hollow wall, a well-adjusted impact drill may suffice. Repeated holes in concrete or larger diameters point towards an SDS rotary hammer. A chipping model can also be used for small demolitions when it has the appropriate mode, without replacing a demolition hammer for large jobs.

Drilling, dust, and tool control

Locate cables and conduits before drilling. Use a compatible and well-maintained drill bit, hold the auxiliary handle, and wear safety glasses, hearing protection, and a mask suitable for dust. Do not force sideways and let the tool work on its axis.
