How to choose wrenches, sockets, and tightening tools?

This collection includes three torque wrenches covering different ranges, ratchet wrench and socket sets, a Torx bit set, and impact socket adapters. It caters to common tightening as well as controlled torque on bicycles, automobiles, or mechanical assemblies, without confusing drive size, bit type, and range.

The four correspondences to respect

  • Torque range: A torque wrench is most accurate in the middle of its range. Choose a range that encompasses the values prescribed by the manufacturer.
  • Drive size: 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 inch sizes must match the sockets and the force applied.
  • Bit type: Hexagonal, Torx, or other: the socket must exactly fit the fastener. An approximate fit will round off screws and nuts.
  • Impact use: Only sockets and adapters explicitly designed for impact should be used with an impact wrench. A standard chrome tool can be dangerous.

Common tightening or controlled torque?

For quick assembly and disassembly, a ratchet with the right socket set is suitable. On a wheel, a bicycle component, or a critical fastener, apply the prescribed torque with a wrench whose range is appropriate. Small torques require a sensitive tool, while automotive tightening often uses a larger drive size. Adapters allow connecting two formats but sometimes reduce access or permissible capacity. A torque wrench is used for final tightening, not for loosening seized fasteners.

Calibration, storage, and safety

Clean the fastener, fully engage the socket, and pull gradually without improvised extensions. Stop at the torque wrench signal and return it to its storage value if its instructions require it. Avoid impacts and drops, keep mechanisms dry, and have the calibration checked according to the frequency of use.
