How to choose a chainsaw and maintain its chain?

The selection includes 6- to 8-inch mini-chainsaws, 12- and 16-inch models, a telescopic pole saw, a tool compatible with certain batteries, two sharpeners, a sharpening kit, and a cutting guide. It thus combines the machine, working at height, and blade maintenance.

The four compatibilities to check

  • Bar length: A short bar favors pruning and maneuverability; a longer bar handles larger sections within the tool's limits. It does not allow for all cuts.
  • Chain: Pitch, gauge, number of links, and bar must match. A chain that is simply close in length can be incompatible and dangerous.
  • Power supply: Cordless models depend on the battery actually supplied or compatible. Compare autonomy, voltage, and the availability of a second battery.
  • Sharpening: Grinding wheel or file diameter and angle must match the chain. The cutting guide and sharpeners each have a specific range of use.

Mini, standard, or telescopic?

The mini-chainsaw is suitable for small branches and occasional work with a stable grip. The 12- to 16-inch sizes cover larger cuts, within the announced capacity and with an appropriate technique. The telescopic model helps reach certain branches without a ladder, but increases the lever arm.

Chain protection and maintenance

Wear PPE specific to chainsaw work, clear a retreat area, and never work alone on a risky operation. Keep both hands on the designated tool, avoid the kickback zone of the bar nose, and disconnect the power before tensioning or sharpening. Check the brake, casing, lubrication, and condition of the links. A cracked, deformed, or excessively worn chain must be replaced, not repaired.
