When to water a potted plant? Not just because it's Sunday or its first leaf is drooping. Start by identifying the plant, check the soil below the surface, and cross-reference several indicators. A still-damp root ball doesn't need more water out of habit.

Here are five points to help you decide: observe the plant, examine the root ball, use a tester discerningly, water without leaving standing water, and monitor its progress. This method applies to classic pots with drainage holes; hydroponic systems and self-watering pots follow their own rules.

1. When to water a potted plant: start with its needs

Observing the leaves of a potted plant to determine its needs before watering.

First, find the species name on its label. A succulent that stores water in its leaves and a plant that prefers moist substrate do not require the same interval between waterings. Therefore, there is no universal watering schedule or humidity percentage valid for all pots.

Next, observe the entire plant. Soft leaves, yellowing, or stunted growth can accompany several problems, including overwatering. The RHS specifically reminds us that a wilted plant in damp soil may have damaged roots. Adding more water without checking can worsen the situation.

Finally, note what has changed: moving near a window, bringing it indoors, cooler temperatures, or the heating being turned on. In September, do not automatically copy the watering rhythm from a warm period. Your goal is to adapt your observations to real conditions, not to predict a perfect frequency once and for all.

2. Check the root ball rather than just the surface

A light crust on the surface can hide still-damp soil. For an accessible pot, gently touch the substrate slightly below the surface, without disturbing the roots. If it remains cool and moist, compare this finding with the species' needs before watering. Do not randomly insert a sharp object into dense soil.

Weight provides a second indicator: compare the same pot after drainage and then as it approaches its next watering. Only lift light containers that you can safely handle with both hands; never pull on the stem. This indicator becomes useful with practice, but comparing two pots made of different materials makes little sense.

Also look at the saucer and cachepot. Water retained at the bottom completely changes the interpretation. A very light pot with a dry root ball requires a different decision than a heavy, damp pot, even if the leaves look similar. Gardena's watering tips also recommend touching the substrate to decide.

3. Supplement observation with a soil moisture meter

A tester can help when the surface is misleading or when several pots dry out differently. The ST-03 model offered by Manuzen includes a soil moisture reading, among six advertised functions. Use this information as a supplementary indicator: it does not replace knowledge of the plant or examination of drainage.

Read the instructions before the first measurement: suitable power supply, any necessary preparation, depth, and reading time. The battery is not included. Insert the probes gently into an accessible area, without forcing against a stone, root, or the bottom of the pot. Keep the housing out of the soil and water, then compare a few points while minimizing handling.

The substrate, its contact with the probes, and measurement conditions can influence interpretation. An isolated value does not justify a large amount of water. If it clearly contradicts your other observations, repeat the process according to the instructions. The product sheet does not confirm a quantified precision or a universal threshold: we do not invent one.

Pay attention to the screen: ambient humidity is not soil humidity. Similarly, a pH or fertility indication does not directly tell you when to water. Do not add fertilizer to correct a simple doubt about water.

4. Water only if necessary, then allow to drain

If observations align with the species' needs, gradually water the soil with water suitable for that plant. Point the spout towards the substrate to limit splashes. For a classic pot with drainage holes, ensure water can escape and then let it drain; empty any residual water from the saucer or cachepot.

If the water immediately flows through along the sides while the root ball remains dry, do not consider the problem solved. Dehydrated substrate can be difficult to re-wet. Proceed gradually according to the species-specific advice, without leaving the plant submerged indefinitely. Conversely, a pot that remains saturated requires examination of its drainage before any new watering.

Avoid: adding a small glass every day out of habit, watering a plant that is already waterlogged, or keeping the tester in the pot during watering. Remove the device before pouring water and keep electrical equipment away.

5. Monitor changes and maintain the tester

For a few weeks, simply note the date of the check, the condition of the soil, and your decision: water or wait. Add any changes in location or temperature. There's no need to turn this into a complex chart; two pots may receive different care on the same day.

The correct reflex is to schedule a check, not mandatory watering. If a pot stays wet much longer than before, look for an explanation: cooler conditions, reduced light, hindered drainage, or a struggling plant. If symptoms persist despite appropriate watering, seek advice from a plant professional rather than increasing water and fertilizer.

After each use, remove the ST-03, gently clean the probes according to its instructions, and store the unit in a dry place. Do not immerse the casing and do not leave the device permanently outdoors. Keep its tips out of reach of children and animals.
