How do I wash a high-visibility jacket without damaging it?
Has your jacket gathered dust, dirt marks, or odors after a day outside? To wash a high-visibility jacket, start with its label: it determines whether domestic washing is permitted, as well as the cycle and drying method. There is no universal temperature that applies to all reflective jackets. A tip found online can never replace the manufacturer's instructions for your specific model.
This guide covers five steps, from preparation to the final check. It also distinguishes between a garment with reflective elements and certified protective equipment: a shiny appearance is not enough to demonstrate a level of protection.
1. Read the label before cleaning a reflective jacket

Locate the inner label and keep the instructions. The number inside the washtub symbol indicates the maximum temperature; the lines underneath call for a gentler mechanical action. A crossed-out tub prohibits water washing. Drying and ironing symbols must also be read, not just the washing one. The GINETEX symbol guide can help you interpret them.
Is the label faded, missing, or contradictory to the product sheet? Ask the seller for written instructions before wetting the garment. "Polyester" or "reflective" describes a material or a function, not a complete care protocol. Photographing a still-legible label allows you to keep this reference for future washes.
For professional clothing provided by an employer, follow the established maintenance process. If it is contaminated with a dangerous or unknown substance, do not mix it with household laundry: report the situation to the relevant manager.
2. Empty pockets and minimize friction

Place the jacket on a clean surface and inspect every pocket. Remove keys, screws, tissues, and any removable accessories as per the instructions. Close all zippers and fasteners designed for that purpose: a loose hook or metal piece can snag the fabric during the wash cycle.
Separate it from very rough clothing, items with metal edges, and heavily soiled laundry. Do not overload the drum. Turning the jacket inside out can reduce friction on its outer surface, if the manufacturer recommends it. This precaution does not authorize washing if it is otherwise prohibited.
For stains, avoid scrubbing reflective areas vigorously, using solvents, or improvised mixtures. First, check which stain remover is permitted. If no method is documented, ask for advice rather than trying various fixes. The goal is to remove the dirt, not to wear down the surface while seeking a like-new appearance.

To check before buying: the consulted sheet specifies neither a wash cycle nor EN ISO 20471 certification. Do not choose this model as a substitute for required PPE on a construction site without proof of suitable compliance.
Order with confidence. Preparation generally within 1 to 2 business days, then delivery generally within 2 to 6 business days after shipping, unless otherwise indicated on the sheet; delivery terms and tracking. Secure payment via credit card, PayPal, or Shop Pay. 30-day commercial return for eligible, complete, unused, and resalable products. A question about the instructions? 3. Choose compatible detergent and a cycle

Once home washing is confirmed, apply the indicated cycle. Do not automatically choose 60°C for work clothing, nor 30°C assuming that temperature suits everything. The construction, prints, and attached elements may impose different constraints.
Use a detergent compatible with the manufacturer's recommendations, dosed correctly according to their instructions and your water. More product does not mean a better result. Reflective Apparel’s advice specifically recommends avoiding chlorine and fabric softeners for their reflective clothing; check for the same restrictions on your own model. Do not add a waterproofing treatment without specific authorization.
Also respect the prescribed spin cycle. If the machine offers several similar programs, compare their description to the label rather than just their name. For the WOSAWE jacket featured here, we do not have a confirmed wash cycle: the illustrations show preparation, not a machine-wash validation.
4. Respect drying time without forcing it

Check the drying symbol before getting the tumble dryer out. When natural drying is permitted, hang the garment in the recommended position in a well-ventilated area. A proper hanger is only suitable if the instructions allow line drying. Avoid wringing out the fabric forcefully to save a few minutes.
Do not place the jacket on a radiator and do not apply direct heat to reflective elements. Ironing is not an automatic step; follow its symbol and the restrictions regarding prints. Before storing, ensure the hood, cuffs, and folds are dry. Plan this maintenance time between two uses so you don't have to put on a still-damp jacket.
5. Check the condition and know when to stop using it

When dry, look at the seams, zippers, and reflective surfaces. Peeling, cracking, tearing, or persistent staining require expert assessment; do not mask them with tape. Household lighting or a flash photo is not enough to certify the garment's performance.
If the manufacturer indicates a maximum number of cycles, track the washes and respect this limit. Deterioration may require an earlier replacement. The INRS emphasizes the importance of instructions, maintenance, and checking protective clothing. To choose equipment based on usage, also consult our guide to visibility clothing for night work.
In short: read, prepare, wash according to the instructions, dry correctly, then inspect. Before a purchase, compare the intended use, size, and proof of protection in our selection of work and visibility clothing.
