How to turn a bed into a sofa? 5 simple and affordable solutions
Layout · Reclamation · Comfort
A bed that doubles as a sofa can free up a lounge area in a studio, a guest room, or a small home. The result depends less on the number of accessories than on three things: a seat at the right depth, a stable backrest, and an easy-to-remove cover.
The simplest solution: keep the box spring and mattress in good condition, place the long side of the bed against a suitable wall, add firm back cushions, and cover the sleeping surface with a fitted textile. A wooden backrest is an option, not a requirement. Pallets are only worth it for a truly appropriate reclamation project.
⭐ OUR #1 RECOMMENDATION · NO RENOVATION NEEDED
The triangular cushion: the simple solution for creating a sofa backrest
Want to turn your bed into a bench seat without building a wooden structure? This triangular backrest cushion provides padded support for reading, watching a series, or relaxing. It sits against a stable support and remains removable so you can use the bed as normal.
- 4 lengths available: 140, 160, 180, and 200 cm.
- Reversible setup: no drilling or assembly required.
- Practical maintenance: cover is stated to be removable and washable, according to the label.
Before ordering, measure your leaning area and the remaining seat depth. This cushion requires a suitable support and does not replace a structural backrest.

Before you buy: can your bed make a good bench?
Sit on the edge of the bed, then test the position with cushions you already own. If the mattress sags significantly or if you have to stretch your legs to reach the floor, a new cover won't fix the problem.
Measure the usable depth, not just the width of the mattress. Example: on a 90 cm wide bed, a backrest and cushions occupying 35 cm leave about 55 cm of seating. This is a layout calculation, not a universal ideal dimension: adapt it to your height and sitting position.
Also check the seat height once the mattress is compressed, the sturdiness of the frame, access to drawers, and the circulation space in front of the bed. Maintain the intended ventilation under the mattress. Don't compensate for a poor height by stacking unstable supports.
Five ways to turn a bed into a sofa
1. Create a backrest with large, firm cushions
This is the first thing to try, especially in a rental. Place the bed with its long side against a wall and use cushions firm enough to support your back, rather than a pile of small decorative cushions that get squashed.
Test several thicknesses before choosing the final textiles. The wall serves as support, but the cushions must not slip into the gap between the bed and the wall. Keep everything easy to remove so you can use the bed at night.
For this first method: discover our triangular backrest cushion for bed and sofa (140 to 200 cm), to be chosen according to the width of the space to be furnished.
2. Cover the mattress and hide the box spring
A fitted mattress cover or a taut bedspread looks neater than a folded duvet. Measure the length, width, and thickness of the mattress. An elasticated cover designed for a sofa with armrests will not automatically fit a bed.
Choose a washable fabric that feels comfortable while sitting, and ensure the drop doesn't get in the way of feet or storage. For a cohesive effect, stick to one main color and a few accents brought by the cushions.

3. Add a wooden backrest adapted to the frame
A rigid backrest can be interesting when you want more stable support or a custom finish. It must be fixed to a suitable support: you cannot simply place a board behind the mattress and hope it stays in place.
Attachment depends on the frame and the forces exerted when leaning back. Prepare the project based on its actual dimensions and have the assembly checked if you lack experience. A headboard intended for the short end won't necessarily turn into a side backrest without modification.
4. Use pallet boards for cladding
Reclaimed wood can be used to clad a backrest already properly designed or to create a decorative element. This is where a pallet pry bar becomes relevant: it helps separate the boards you want to reuse. It is not necessary for the cushion and cover version.
The strength of a shipping pallet does not guarantee the strength of a sofa made with its boards. For a first attempt, keeping the existing box spring and working on non-load-bearing cladding is simpler than rebuilding the entire seat.

5. Arrange a reversible corner bench
In a room corner, a single bed can benefit from two sides of support. Cushions on the long side form the backrest; a side cushion creates a soft armrest. This arrangement gives the corner a lounge function without adding a bulky structure.
Check the window opening, radiator access, and circulation. Also plan a place to store the cushions at night: the transformation must remain practical on a daily basis, not become a chore.

Dismantle, prepare, assemble: three tools depending on your project
To reclaim boards and make cladding, these tools serve three different tasks. Reuse those you already have: you don't need to buy all three to turn a bed into a bench.

Reclaim the boards
104 cm Pallet pry bar. The long lever helps separate nailed boards by distributing the effort. Use gradually on a stabilized pallet; remaining nails can be removed with the appropriate tool.

Prepare the wood
125 mm, 300 W random orbital sander. Useful for preparing the surfaces of healthy wood before finishing. Choose the abrasive according to the condition of the wood; edges and small corners require separate attention.

Assemble properly
DEKO cordless drill/driver. For pilot holes and screwing an assembly designed for your frame. Content, voltage, and accessories depend on the selected pack.

Reclamation option: preparing the wood without complicating the project
Choose a pallet of known origin
Use only wood whose origin and history you know. Discard moldy, split, oil-impregnated, foul-smelling boards or those covered in an unknown treatment. Sanding or painting is not enough to make contaminated wood suitable for indoor use.
The HT marking refers to a phytosanitary heat treatment, as explained by EPAL in its presentation of ISPM 15. It does not inform you of everything that was transported or spilled on the pallet afterward.
Dismantle without trying to rip everything off at once
Stabilize the pallet in a clear area. Wear work gloves and safety glasses for this phase. Engage the tool correctly, apply gradual effort, then change the fulcrum point when the board starts to lift. Keep hands away from pinch points and the body out of the lever's path.
If a board splits or resists abnormally, stop and change the method. Reclaiming an extra board isn't worth an injury. Then remove the nails and staples, and inspect each side before any cutting or sanding.
Prepare, present, then fix
Work on dry, identified wood with a suitable abrasive and proper dust collection. Do not blindly sand old paint or an unknown coating. Dry-fit the elements to check dimensions and textile paths before assembly.
Screw length, anchor points, and reinforcements depend on your structure. Leave no sharp points, soften accessible edges, and do not drill into a metal frame or box spring blindly. Decorative cladding should not be used as a load-bearing backrest.
The control that matters: before use, check the stability of the bed and backrest, the absence of play and sharp parts, as well as mattress ventilation. If an element moves when you lean back normally, fix its design before using it. Respect the loads intended for the original bed.
Which solution really keeps a small budget?
| Your priority | Solution to try | Point to check |
|---|---|---|
| No drilling | Firm cushions against a wall | Depth and slippage |
| Improve appearance | Fitted cover or bedspread | Dimensions and washing |
| Create rigid support | Wooden backrest designed for the frame | Strength of fasteners |
| Reuse wood | Reclaimed board cladding | Origin, condition, and preparation |
| Organize a lounge corner | Reversible corner bench | Circulation and night storage |
Compare the cost of textiles, cushions, wood, fasteners, finish, and missing tools. Free wood doesn't necessarily result in the cheapest project. A test with your existing equipment often reveals where to spend money effectively.
Frequent mistakes: keeping a mattress that is too saggy, buying a cover before measuring, creating a backrest that is too deep, blocking drawers, or installing a large board that isn't fixed. Comfort is verified by sitting; it is not judged only by a photo.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn a 90 × 190 cm bed into a sofa?
Yes, if the frame is stable and the mattress is comfortable in a seated position. The long side becomes the length of the bench. Adjust the depth with cushions and test the actual height: the bed's dimensions are not enough to guarantee comfort.
And with a 140 cm wide bed?
It's possible for a deep relaxation space, but generally bulkier than a bench. A large backrest reduces the available seating area without eliminating the bed's footprint on the floor. Check above all the circulation space and night-time use.
Are pallets and a pallet pry bar absolutely necessary?
No. For a transformation with cushions and textiles, you don't need dismantling tools. The pallet pry bar is only involved if you have chosen to reclaim boards for a wood project.
How to keep the sleeping area practical every night?
Prefer removable elements, an easy-to-remove cover, and nearby storage for the cushions. Do not obstruct mattress ventilation and keep box spring access for maintenance.
When is it better to choose a sofa bed?
If the bed is too high, too deep, damaged, or impossible to furnish comfortably, accumulating accessories risks being expensive for a disappointing result. A sofa bed adapted to the frequency of use can then be an alternative; this is a furniture replacement, not a transformation of the existing bed.

The right order: test comfort, measure, choose a reversible transformation, then only consider wood. You thus keep a useful project that is consistent with your space, rather than a shopping list.
