How to install a salt-free water softener? 5 steps
How to install a water softener without confusing a resin-based device with a salt-free scale inhibitor system? The method primarily depends on the chosen technology. In this guide, we explain in five steps how to assess the need, choose the location, orient the flow, perform a clean connection, and put the installation back into service.
The Manuzen product presented here is a salt-free alternative designed to limit the formation or adhesion of limescale. It should not be confused with a resin-based softener that lowers water hardness, uses salt, and performs regeneration cycles. This distinction avoids planning for drainage, a salt tank, or an electrical connection that are not listed on the model's product sheet.
1. Check water hardness and system type

Before cutting a pipe, measure your water hardness or consult your supplier's data. Hardness (TH) indicates whether the observed problem genuinely comes from limescale. Traces on faucets, a scaled heating element, or frequently clogged aerators are indicators, but not a measurement.
A resin-based softener exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium and effectively reduces TH. A salt-free scale inhibitor aims instead to limit deposits without necessarily removing these minerals. The Anses opinion on scale prevention processes distinguishes between hardness elimination and its inhibition. After installing a salt-free system, do not promise an automatic reduction in TH.
The product sheet for the Manuzen whole-house salt-free water softener confirms a principle of scale inhibition, operation without regular salt replenishment, and low maintenance. It does not confirm pressure, threading, or a quantified TH reduction: these points must be checked in the manual and on the actual installation.
2. Choose the location and prepare for connection

Locate the main cold water inlet and the actual direction towards the equipment to be protected. Choose an accessible, dry, frost-free area that is clear enough to allow isolation and removal of the device. Avoid locations where the unit or its connections could be struck, support the weight of other pipes, or be exposed to high heat.
Measure the diameter, material, and available space before purchasing adapters. The mention "standard domestic network" does not mean that a single fitting is suitable for all homes. Copper, multilayer, or PEX require different fittings and tools. Also check if the kit contains all necessary parts; a bypass, isolation valves, clamps, or backflow prevention may need to be added.
Plan a bypass if you wish to retain an untreated cold water point for a specific use. The installation must comply with applicable sanitary regulations for the internal network. If the main inlet is difficult to identify or if you are not comfortable assembling the existing material, entrust the connection to a plumber.

3. Turn off water, plan bypass, and respect flow direction

Close the main inlet, turn off affected appliances according to their instructions, then open a lower faucet to release residual pressure. Verify that water flow has stopped before cutting. Protect the floor and keep a container nearby: a drained pipe may still contain water.
Then perform a dry fit. The arrow printed on the body must follow the actual flow direction, from the inlet to the network to be protected. Never deduce this direction from a photo's position. Position the valves or bypass so that the system can be isolated without long-term water deprivation to the dwelling. The bypass is not stated as being supplied: check the necessary components before starting the work.
Mark cuts only when the total length of the fittings is confirmed. A common mistake is to measure the cylinder alone and forget about adapters, nuts, or insertion depth. To review cutting and water restoration steps on a simpler installation, the guide how to change a kitchen faucet provides useful additional information.
4. Connect the salt-free system without straining the pipes

Deburr and clean the ends according to the pipe material. Install each gasket exactly as specified in the instructions. Hand-tighten the threads to avoid cross-threading, then tighten the hexagonal parts with two wrenches in opposing directions. Never tighten a wrench directly on the chrome body.
The pipes must remain aligned and supported by clamps on each side. The cylinder should neither bear the weight of a pipe length nor be used to force two misplaced pipes together. Constant strain on connections increases the risk of leaks. Do not add paste, tape, or grease to a flat or O-ring gasket without compatible instructions from the manual.
Unlike a resin-based softener, this in-line system's product sheet does not mention a salt tank, regeneration cycle, or brine discharge. Do not create one. However, any modification to a potable water network must prevent backflow and preserve sanitary quality. Article R1321-57 of the Public Health Code reminds the owner of their responsibility regarding necessary protections.
5. Restore water, check for leaks, and maintain

Close purge points, place valves in the intended position, and gradually reopen the main water supply. Abrupt repressurization can stress connections. Purge air at a faucet, then wipe a dry paper towel around each fitting: it reveals weeping better than a quick hand check.
If a trace appears, close the water, depressurize, and correct the assembly. Do not overtighten a connection under pressure. Also check that the pipe remains stable, that the clamps do not transmit stress to the cylinder, and that the bypass properly isolates the device.
Then follow the instructions for checks and maintenance. With a salt-free scale inhibitor, the TH may remain close to the original value; instead, judge operation according to the manufacturer's recommendations and the evolution of deposits, without turning a one-time observation into a guarantee. To install a salt-free water softener properly, the key is matching the need, the flow direction, and a strain-free connection.
