How do you cut a steel tube perfectly straight?
To cut a steel tube straight, combine a square layout, a blade suited to the wall thickness, and a hold that prevents the tube from rotating. A band saw with a stand can guide the work but does not automatically correct a misaligned vise or insufficiently supported workpiece.
These five points cover tube identification, blade selection, clamping, cutting, and final inspection. This guide concerns a separate, known workpiece. Never cut a live pipeline, a closed container, or a part likely to contain a hazardous product.
1. Identify the tube and mark the cut all around

Check the material, shape, and wall thickness. A round tube, a square profile, and a solid bar do not stress the blade in the same way. The outer dimension alone does not indicate the cross-section actually cut by the teeth.
Identify any unknown coatings, residues, or treatments. Old paint or deposits should not be heated or dispersed without evaluation. For a recovered part of uncertain origin, identify the risks before any operation.
Measure the useful length from a reliable reference and mark the waste side. On a square tube, use a square to extend the line on all faces. On a round tube, a correctly made peripheral mark helps visualize perpendicularity.
Consider the kerf width to maintain the correct length. If the part must fit into a precise assembly, plan for the necessary finishing without randomly removing a large reserve. Repeated measurement before sawing costs less than a tube cut too short.
2. Choose the blade according to the metal and wall thickness

Check the dimensions and type of blade allowed by the saw. The teeth must be suitable for steel and the thickness encountered. Too coarse a tooth on a thin wall can catch; the precise choice should follow the recommendations of the blade and machine manufacturer.
The Manuzen saw shown is advertised at 1100 W, with six speeds, 220 V power supply, and EU plug. The alloy stand is included, as well as an advertised 2 m cable. The maximum stated capacity is 127 mm.
This capacity does not guarantee that all 127 mm shapes will pass in all orientations. Check the admitted geometry, available clamping, and limits of the stand mounting. Do not transform a commercial maximum value into a promise of universal cutting.
Unplug before installing or checking the blade. Observe the mounting direction, tension, and guide settings described in the manual. A damaged blade or one that is not properly tracked on its wheels must be corrected before restarting.

3. Immobilize the tube and check the squareness of the setup

Install the stand on a stable support suitable for the machine. Check the fasteners and access to the stop. A saw that moves on a light workbench will not allow for clean work, even with a tight vise.
Clamp the tube in the designated device, with a grip that prevents its rotation. For a round tube, check that the jaws are suitable for its shape. Do not compensate for a poor grip by holding the workpiece by hand near the blade.
Support overhanging lengths with supports at the correct height. They must support the workpiece without lifting it out of the vise or closing the cut during sawing. The cut-off piece also requires an arrangement that prevents it from falling on your feet.
With the machine unplugged, compare the layout to the cutting plane and check the angle according to the method described in the manual. Do not twist the blade with a square to force it to match the line. If the angle is incorrect, adjust the authorized settings.
4. Cut the steel tube without excessive pressure

Wear the necessary protection for projections and noise. Keep clothing, hair, and accessories away from the band. Gloves useful for handling a stopped blade or deburred cut should not create a risk of entanglement near moving parts; follow machine instructions.
Choose the speed level according to the blade, material, and manual. The six available positions do not provide a universal setting for all steels. Test on a scrap piece of the same cross-section when first using the machine.
Engage the blade gradually and let it work without forcing. Excessive effort can cause deviation or premature wear. If the noise changes abruptly, if the tube moves, or if the cut slows down abnormally, stop before diagnosing.
Do not remove chips with your fingers during operation and do not add unauthorized lubricant. A band saw is not an abrasive disc tool; do not look for a plume of sparks as a sign of normal cutting.
Keep hands on the designated control areas and out of the cutting plane. At the end, wait for a complete stop before releasing the tube or cut-off. If jamming occurs, cut power and unplug before any intervention according to the manufacturer's procedure.
5. Deburr and then check length and angle

The cut can leave a sharp edge both on the outside and inside of the tube. Allow to cool if necessary, then use a suitable deburring tool on a held part. Do not check sharpness by running a finger over the raw edge.
Check the length from the same reference as at the start. Check squareness on multiple faces or positions, depending on the tube's shape. A visually clean face may still be slightly inclined.
If the cut repeatedly deviates, do not correct each piece with extensive grinding. Look for a defect in the blade, tension, guidance, speed, or holding. Diagnosing the machine prevents repeating the error throughout an entire series.
Clean chips with a suitable method, with the machine isolated from its power supply. Inspect the blade and store components according to the instructions. Then protect the cutting area against corrosion if use and finish require it.
To remember: cutting a steel tube straight primarily depends on alignment and holding, then on the blade and feed. Check the actual cross-section and the stand's capabilities before choosing the saw, and check a first cut before starting a series.
