How to engrave glass with a rotary tool?
To learn how to engrave glass with a rotary tool, start with a small design on a suitable test piece. Quality comes from a stable support, an appropriate bit, and light passes. Pressing harder does not automatically make the line sharper; it can lead to slips and weaken the glass.
This guide presents five points for simple decoration, without cutting the glass: choosing the support, preparing the design, checking the accessory, progressively engraving, and inspecting. It does not concern installed glazing, safety elements, or items subject to particular stress.
1. Choose suitable glass and a stable workstation

To start, choose a small, flat decorative support with pre-finished edges, for which the manufacturer allows engraving. Its surface must be clean, accessible, and without chips. A curved or very thin object adds difficulty in holding and perceiving depth.
Do not work on a cracked piece, tempered glass, or safety glazing without explicit manufacturer validation. Also, do not modify a pressure vessel or an element whose integrity provides a protective function. The transparent appearance does not allow recognition of all compositions or treatments.
Place the support on a clean, non-slip surface, securing it so it doesn't slide without creating pinpoint pressure. Avoid direct metallic clamping on the glass. The piece should neither vibrate on an edge nor tip over when the bit approaches.
Set up lighting that reveals the lines without glare. Plan for dust management, safety glasses, and appropriate respiratory protection. Fine particles should not be blown towards the face. Keep children, pets, and food items away from the work area.
2. Place a simple, visible design

Choose a design composed of a few wide, spaced lines: a small leaf, a geometric shape, or an outline without tight details. Small letters and shading require more regularity. For a first attempt, a legible design is more important than great complexity.
If the glass is transparent, place a paper template behind the surface and secure it so it doesn't move. Check its orientation from the side you will be working on. When engraving on the reverse side to view the design through the glass, some designs and all text require prior inversion.
Look as much as possible in line with the engraved area. A very oblique angle creates an apparent shift between the bit, the surface, and the design placed behind. This parallax phenomenon explains irregular contours even when the hand seems to follow the template perfectly.
Reserve a margin around the design, away from edges and already fragile areas. Before plugging in the tool, simulate the path with an unengaged bit. Check that the cable doesn't pull on your hand and that you can move the support when stationary to maintain a comfortable position.

3. Check the bit, its attachment, and speed

Glass engraving requires an accessory explicitly designed for this material, for example, an appropriate diamond bit. A small grinding wheel supplied with a multi-purpose tool is not automatically a glass engraving bit. Check the shank diameter, clamping system, and permissible speeds.

Mount the bit with the tool unplugged, according to the instructions. Check that it is straight, properly secured, and free of defects. Then choose the recommended speed for the bit and material combination, starting trials cautiously on a similar piece. 4. Engrave the glass with small, light passes

Adopt a grip that allows guiding the tool without tensing your hand, using the designated gripping areas. Do not block its ventilation openings. Rest your forearm to limit unwanted movements, while keeping fingers and clothing away from the rotating bit.
Start off-contact, then gently approach the test area. Make a short stroke with light pressure. Stop and observe: look for a regular mark, without chips or abnormal vibration. A lightly marked line can be redone with several passes; abrupt pressure is not a good method for speeding up.
Progress portion by portion along the outline. To change position, remove the bit, wait for it to stop, and reposition the support. Avoid continuing the movement when your wrist reaches its limit. A connection of two short strokes may be cleaner than a long, forced line.
Do not add water to the workstation of a mains-powered electric tool unless expressly authorized by the relevant instructions. The wet methods of some specialized equipment do not transfer to an ordinary rotary tool. In case of cracks, unusual heating, vibration, or a bit that snags, stop and examine the setup before continuing.
5. Clean, inspect, and decide on touch-ups

Turn off the power and wait for it to come to a complete stop before putting the tool down. Remove dust with an appropriate method that does not re-suspend it. Do not sweep residues with bare hands or blow on them. Clean the glass away from the unplugged machine, following the support's recommendations.
Remove the template and observe the design against a plain background. The visibility of an engraving varies greatly with light; this is not necessarily a depth defect. Check the continuity of the lines before considering another pass.
If a section needs to be redone, place the piece back in a stable hold and recreate the test conditions. Do not try to erase a slip by digging out the entire surrounding area: you could enlarge the defect or weaken the object. A cracked or chipped support must be removed from its intended use.
Finally, inspect the bit and store it protected. Keep the template and a note of the accessory used to reproduce the project on an identical support. Any change in glass, bit, or machine justifies a new test rather than an automatic resumption of settings.
