How to install drawer slides without misalignment?
Installing drawer slides without misalignment begins with the hardware manual. The lateral clearance, setback, and screw positions vary depending on the mechanism; a dimension taken from a different model may be enough to cause the entire drawer to jam.
This guide follows five points for standard side-mounted slides: identifying the system, transferring references, pre-drilling, assembling, and adjusting. Undermount concealed slides require their own manufacturing plan and cannot be installed by simple transposition.
1. Identify the slides and check the cabinet dimensions

Find the reference for the slides, their length, their mounting orientation, and the manufacturer's diagram. Distinguish between the part attached to the cabinet and the part carried by the drawer. Some mechanisms separate, others do not; do not force a component assuming it should unclip.
Measure the interior width of the cabinet, the width of the drawer, and the available depth. Compare these to the required clearance and setback. A pair of slides will not fix a drawer that is too wide or a case that is deformed. Also, verify that the front will be able to close without encountering an obstacle.
Check the squareness of the cabinet and the drawer. Inconsistent diagonals or non-parallel sides can explain a blockage even before fastening. Stabilize the cabinet and correct any defects permitted by its construction.
Finally, check the intended load and the use of the hardware. The weight of the drawer counts along with its contents. Do not transpose the announced capacity of a mechanism to an incomplete assembly or different screws.
2. Transfer the same reference to both sides

Choose a common base: the bottom or a reference line defined by the manual, and the same front plane. Transfer the positions to the left and right without changing the origin. Measuring one side from the bottom and the other from an upper shelf multiplies the risks of a discrepancy.
Use a block or a suitable jig when multiple drawers are planned. It must rest on a stable surface and reproduce the desired dimension. A deformed piece of soft cardboard does not provide a reliable reference for a series of holes.
Present the slides and check the direction. The left and right pieces may look alike without being interchangeable. Identify the adjustment holes and the final fasteners provided by the manufacturer; their role cannot be deduced solely from their shape.
Check height, setback, and parallelism before marking the holes. Remove the pieces if necessary to verify that the marks correspond. This double check costs little time compared to repairing a panel drilled in the wrong place.

12–20 V cordless drill driver, 42 Nm, 10 mm chuck — DEKO
- The 10 mm chuck allows for the use of small drill bits compatible with pilot holes.
- Wood and metal usage is indicated for preparing holes compatible with the material.
- The cordless format makes it easy to change positions around a small cabinet.
- The LED lighting helps to see the marks inside the cabinet.
Choose the exact 12–20 V variant and its pack. The announced maximum torque of 42 Nm is not a setting for small screws: work gradually and finish with control. Slides, drill bits, and screws are not assumed to be included.

3. Pre-drill without going through the panels

Check the type and length of the screws provided for the hardware and the cabinet material. The diameter of the pilot hole depends on this combination. A screw that is too long can go through the panel, even if its head fits perfectly into the slide.
Prepare the depth with a suitable depth stop, then perform a test on a comparable piece of scrap wood. The effective depth should not be estimated solely by the sound of the drill. Also, keep a margin compatible with the opposite side and the assembly.
Remove the battery before changing the drill bit. Immobilize the piece and drill along the axis, without percussion in a cabinet panel. A slow, controlled feed helps to avoid drifting or plunging the drill bit abruptly.
The DEKO drill can be used for these pilot holes and for driving the screws. The announced maximum torque is not a tightening instruction. Start with a cautious setting and finish manually if necessary so as not to tear the material.
4. Fasten gradually and engage the drawer without forcing

Fix the rails using the recommended order and holes, while maintaining the provided adjustment possibilities. Tighten sufficiently for support without deforming the hardware or crushing the panel. An unsuitable screw head can protrude and hinder the movement.
Mount the corresponding elements on the drawer with the same reference checks. Verify that the screws do not encroach on the useful interior or a groove for the bottom. Clean up any shavings before presenting the assembly.
Engage the drawer according to the mechanism, using both hands, keeping your fingers out of pinch points. Both sides must follow their intended path. Do not use force to overcome a hard spot: you risk deforming the rail or damaging a locking mechanism.
If the engagement does not happen normally, remove it according to the manual and recheck the direction, height, and parallelism. An assembly error cannot always be solved by lubrication; some mechanisms already have a treatment that must be preserved.
5. Test empty and then finish adjustments and fastenings

Open and close the empty drawer gently several times. Observe the front gaps, parallelism, and friction points. Smooth movement while empty constitutes a first check, not a validation of the maximum load.
Adjust only the settings provided by the manufacturer. Modify one parameter at a time and recheck. Loosening all the screws simultaneously can cause you to lose your references and make diagnosis more difficult.
Once the position is validated, add the required final fasteners and check the tightness. Do not leave a slide held only by a temporary point. Also, check the stability of the cabinet: opening a loaded drawer can change its balance.
Load gradually within the limits of the system and distribute the contents. If the movement deteriorates significantly, find the cause before continuing. A drawer intended for a few accessories should not be filled with heavy tools without checking the hardware, the bottom, and the stability of the cabinet.
To install drawer slides, remember above all a common reference, the hardware dimensions, and an empty test before filling. The drill makes pilot holes and screwing easier, but alignment comes primarily from checking the measurements.
