How to use a drill to set blind rivets?

A blind rivet allows two parts to be joined when only one side is accessible. With a suitable adapter, a drill driver can provide the necessary traction to deform the rivet body and break its mandrel. Knowing how to install blind rivets with a drill, however, requires more than just mounting the accessory in the chuck: the diameter, drilling, holding of the parts, and alignment determine the strength of the joint. Here is a five-point method for achieving a clean assembly on a sheet metal or profile.

1. Choosing the right rivet for the assembly

Start by identifying the material and total thickness of the parts to be joined. The clamping range of the rivet must cover this cumulative thickness; it is not solely deduced from the shank diameter. Consult the rivet packaging or documentation, as a rivet that is too short will not properly form its tail, and one that is too long can result in a loose assembly or deform thin sheet metal.

The diameter influences the resistance and the hole diameter. Finally, ensure that the rivet head will adequately cover the hole without interfering with an adjacent part. A specific washer may sometimes be necessary on a soft substrate, but it must be designed for this purpose.

2. Drilling, deburring, and holding the parts

Superimpose the parts in their final position and secure them with clamps. The clamping must prevent any slipping without crushing the profile. Mark the center of the hole, then use a drill bit compatible with the metal and the recommended diameter for the rivet. A hole that is too narrow prevents insertion; a hole that is too wide reduces support and can allow the rivet to move.

Wear safety glasses and keep hands clear of the drill bit axis. Drill both parts together if their geometry allows, with the tool perpendicular to the surface. Appropriate speed and pressure limit overheating. On sheet metal, a backer board under the exit area helps control drilling. Never hold a small piece directly by hand.

Then deburr both accessible sides. A burr trapped between the parts creates a false tightening; a sharp edge can also cause injury or damage a finish. Dust off, bring the surfaces together, and insert a rivet by hand to check that it passes through without force. Its head must lie flat before installation.

3. Mounting the adapter and the correct nosepiece

Remove the drill battery or unplug it before mounting. Choose the nosepiece that exactly matches the diameter of the rivet's mandrel, then tighten it according to the adapter's instructions. A nozzle that is too large will not grip the shank properly; a nozzle that is too small will not receive it. Keep unused nosepieces away from the work area to avoid confusing them.

Fully insert the hex shank into the drill driver's chuck and tighten it on its flat sides. The accessory should not wobble. Check that your machine is compatible and that its chuck, torque, and settings are suitable for the accessory. The hammer mode must remain deactivated. Take into account the specific instructions for the model, especially for the direction of rotation required for opening and then for traction.

Perform a test on two scraps of the same material. This confirms the nozzle diameter, rotation sequence, and reaction at the moment of mandrel breakage. Wear safety glasses: the shank can break suddenly. Hold the side handle without touching moving parts and never place your face in the line of the rivet.

4. Installing the rivet perfectly perpendicular

Insert the rivet mandrel into the nozzle until its head can rest on the part. Place the rivet body in the hole and press the head flat. The adapter's axis must be perpendicular to the surface: angled pulling deforms the head, marks the sheet metal, and fatigues the mandrel before proper tightening.

Keep one hand on the drill and the other on the adapter handle. Start the pulling sequence gradually, without jerking. The parts must remain clamped until the mandrel breaks. Do not try to "overtighten" after breakage: a blind rivet is not a screw. If the machine strains abnormally, stop rather than abruptly increasing the torque.

After installation, follow the release procedure indicated in the instructions to free the mandrel fragment. Direct this waste into a container; do not let it fall on the floor or into the profile. Wait for a complete stop before repositioning the tool for the next rivet.

5. Checking the rivet and correcting any defects

A correctly installed head is evenly seated on the surface. The parts should not rotate or have a gap near the rivet. Also check the back when accessible: the body should have formed without piercing or tearing the sheet metal. However, a visual check is not sufficient to qualify a structural assembly.

If the mandrel protrudes, if the head is tilted, or if the rivet rotates, do not attempt to hammer it. Protect the part, mark the center, then carefully drill out the head with an appropriate diameter to remove the rivet without enlarging the hole. Find the cause before redoing it: wrong diameter, unsuitable length, ovalized hole, poorly clamped parts, or tilted tool.

Finally, clean the adapter and empty the mandrel fragments according to its instructions. Inspect the jaws and nozzles, then store each nosepiece with its diameter. An accumulation of shanks or dust can impede the mechanism during the next installation.
