How to Use a Framing Square: 5 Key Points
A line appears straight, but the two pieces don't fit together correctly: the problem sometimes starts at the reference edge, long before the saw. To understand how to use a carpenter's square, focus on five actions: choosing the support, drawing at right angles, drawing at 45°, reading the correct graduation, and checking the result. This guide covers common markings on a board or batten. It does not address roof calculations or the sizing of a load-bearing structure.
1. Choose a straight edge and understand the role of the heel

A triangular speed square has a flat body and a heel, which is the edge that rests against the edge of the wood. This contact creates your reference. If the edge has a bump, a large chip, or a pile of sawdust, the square can tip and produce an inaccurate line even if its geometry is correct.
Place the board on a stable surface and clear the edge of debris. Choose the same face and the same starting edge for all markings. On a piece that is already deformed or whose edges are not parallel, a simple tracing with a square will not correct the material. You must first understand the defect and prepare a reference suitable for the project.
Place the body of the tool flat and press the heel against the edge, without excessive pressure. 2. How to use a carpenter's square to draw at 90°?

First, locate the position of the line on the reference edge or right next to it. Slide the square along this edge to the mark, keeping its heel in contact. The edge perpendicular to the heel should then cross the face of the wood in the direction of your future line.
Hold the body with one hand, without obscuring the tracing area. With the other, use a sufficiently fine pencil and follow the edge of the square with a steady movement. Maintain a constant inclination: strongly changing the angle of the pencil between the beginning and the end of the line shifts the lead relative to the guide. You must see where the tip goes, not just where the body of the pencil is.
The line represents the limit to be respected, not automatically the center of the blade's path. Mark the waste side to retain this information when preparing to cut. 3. Draw a 45° angle without losing the reference

For a common 45° angle, keep the heel against the same straight edge and follow the oblique edge of the triangle. The principle is simple, but the direction of the line matters: two cuts angled in the same direction do not always form the desired joint. Mentally, or with two scraps, present the pieces in their final position before transferring the angles.
Draw a single thin mark and clearly identify the material to be kept. On a seemingly symmetrical piece, note the visible face and the mounting side. This avoids flipping the board at the last moment and cutting the angle in the opposite direction. The error often costs more than the few seconds needed for this check.

Here, stick to the fixed edges of the square: roof pitch calculations and framing graduations require specific reading. 4. Read metric graduations and transfer a length

Identify the scale you are using before measuring. The same triangle can have indications of length, angle, and pitch, grouped on a small surface. Check the zero position and the subdivision of the graduations, then look at the mark as perpendicularly as possible. A very oblique reading favors a marking error. When several marks need to be identical, start from the same reference and regularly check the first piece. A small repeated error accumulates if each new mark depends on the previous one. 5. Check the square and lines before cutting

A flip check can detect a right-angle defect. On a board with a straight edge, draw a line along the perpendicular edge. Flip the square, reposition its heel against the same edge, and align its edge with the starting point. The two directions should coincide. A visible discrepancy suggests checking the support, cleanliness, and condition of the tool.
This test is not a certificate of accuracy, but it prevents continuing with a square that has fallen, is deformed, or is poorly positioned. Also check for play and burrs on the edges used. Do not randomly file a reference surface to eliminate a defect: you risk further altering the geometry. Replace the tool if its condition no longer allows for reliable tracing.
