How to choose a solar inverter or charge controller?

The collection includes several pure sine wave inverters rated from 4,000 to 12,000 W depending on the variant, a 12 V to 220 V converter, and two MPPT controllers covering different voltages and currents. It aims for electrical autonomy from a battery or panels, with distinct charging and conversion roles.

The four essential calculations

  • Battery voltage: The device must exactly match the intended 12, 24, or 48 V battery bank. A voltage error can destroy the equipment and create a hazard.
  • Power: Add up the consumption and starting peaks.
  • Regulation: The MPPT manages the charge between panels and battery within its voltage and current limits. It does not replace protections or management adapted to battery chemistry.
  • Waveform: Pure sine wave is preferable for many sensitive devices. However, check the compatibility of each load and the overall efficiency.

Which device in the solar chain?

The controller is placed between the panels and the battery to manage a compatible charge; it is chosen according to the open-circuit voltage of the solar array, current, and battery type. The inverter then converts the DC current from the battery to 220 V for authorized devices. A compact converter is suitable for a more limited installation if its continuous power is sufficient. For a high-power system, cable, fuse, disconnector, ventilation, and battery capacity become as important as the inverter. Have a complete diagram drawn up before purchasing.

Wiring, ventilation, and protection

High-intensity direct current can cause fire and electrical arcing. Use calculated cross-sections, fuses, terminals, and distances, respect polarity and connection order, and have the installation validated by a competent professional. Mount the devices in a dry, ventilated area, away from flammable materials.
