What tools should you choose to prepare walls and plaster?

This collection targets the steps that precede painting or applying a covering: plastering knives, smoothing spatulas, drywall tools, adjustable mortar comb, caulk gun, and wall planer. Each family addresses a specific operation, from repairing a defect to leveling a surface.

The four criteria for a smooth surface

  • Type of surface: Plaster, plasterboard, mortar, wallpaper, or sealant are not worked with the same edge or the same power.
  • Working width: A narrow blade handles details; a wide spatula or knife smooths a larger area. The comb is chosen according to the adhesive and the application.
  • Manual or electric: Manual tools provide control over repairs. The wall planer speeds up removal but requires more mastery and dust management.
  • Ergonomics: Handle, blade rigidity, and weight influence precision. A tool that is too flexible or poorly sized leaves thick spots and tires the wrist.

What tool for each stage of the project?

Use knives to load, fill, and apply plaster, then a wider spatula to smooth compatible areas. Tools dedicated to drywall facilitate joints and finishes. The notched comb distributes tile adhesive at a regular height when its teeth are appropriate. The caulk gun applies products in cartridges along seams.

Dust, blades, and cleaning

Turn off the power to electric tools before adjustment, protect eyes and respiratory tract, and check for hidden networks. Work in moderate passes to avoid digging. Clean blades before products harden, dry steel, and store edges protected. For the caulk gun, release pressure after the bead. Respect drying times for plaster before sanding or finishing.
