How to use a contour gauge: 5 steps

A curve that meets a shelf, a small offset, or a molding can quickly make measurements difficult to transfer. To learn how to use a contour gauge, remember this method: define a reference point, trace the profile, transfer it without inverting, test a template, and check the fit. The tool records a shape; it doesn't choose the correct placement or fitting tolerance for you. Here are five steps to prepare a small decorative wooden piece before any cutting.

1. Prepare the piece and choose a stable reference point

Start by understanding what truly obstructs the piece. A round post requires a curved notch; an irregular wall corner requires a different profile. Ensure the relief is accessible and the body of the gauge can remain flat. A space that's too narrow or a recess deeper than the pin travel cannot be accurately traced with just any gauge.

Place the shelf in its future orientation, without forcing it against the obstacle. Identify its visible face, its reference edge, and the side to be removed. Mark these reference points on masking tape compatible with the finish, or on a test cardboard. They must remain clear once the piece is turned over on the workbench. A simple top-down drawing is often enough to avoid cutting a notch on the wrong side.

Clean the profile to be traced: a wood chip stuck against the post would end up in the tracing. Also, check that the pins slide smoothly without any hard spots. Do not bend them to reproduce an inaccessible shape. Finally, choose a size that covers the useful relief: the total length advertised alone does not indicate the maximum depth the tool can copy.

2. How to use a contour gauge to trace the profile?

Return the pins to a regular starting line, then position the gauge at the exact level where the shelf will pass. A measurement taken higher on a flared obstacle may not accurately describe its width at the piece's height. Keep the gauge in the same plane as the future material, with its body held stable.

Advance progressively towards the relief by pushing the tool's body, without crushing the ends. The pins should slide parallel to each other to conform to the shape; they should not twist. When contact is consistent, stop pushing. Additional pressure does not make the tracing more precise and can move the gauge or mark a fragile surface.
